| This is a Citadel Miniatures' Warhammer 40,000 set. It is very nicely cast in white metal to I believe, 28mm scale and is another in my growing collection of Fantasy mortars and crews. These sets are incredibly imaginative and are wonderful and totally fun subjects to build and paint. |
These sets are designed for the wargaming community in mind and there is a story that goes along with these guys but, I am not into wargaming nor do I know what their 'purpose in life' really is. These kits to me are just fun diversions from the norm and the painting accuracy of these figures is entirely a result of my imagination.
The only modifications to the kit parts were to bore out the mortar tube, the personal weapon barrels and the base of the bombs. Assembly consisted of fixing the bipod legs to the tube and this was done with a Cyanoacrylate (Super) Glue. There was some minor parting line removal required with the majority of that being 'cleaned' by a #11 X-Acto blade, fine metal files and fine metal figure polishing cloth.
The base is 3-1/2 inches (8.9 cm) in diameter x 3/4 inch (1.9 cm) thick and the edge is routered with my Dremel Tool. It is sanded and sealed. I use a lo-tak drafting tape for masking purposes.
The groundwork is my usual Sculptamold and wood glue mix with various forest 'clutter' sprinkled around. The larger stones were found on my property and these are intermixed with kitty litter. The jungle plants are a mixture of dried flowers. The palm fronds were made from wire sandwiched in between two pieces of paper, cut to shape and painted. The tarp is a piece of aluminum foil. All items were glued to the groundwork by using white glue. The figures were also pegged in place for additional stability with shortened lengths of the brass rod that are being shown in the primed photos above.
Paints, including the primer coat and the flat coat are entirely acrylics. The washes were accomplished with artist oils thinned with Turpenoid odorless brush cleaner.
The finishing touch to this vignette was to apply four felt pads on the bottom of the base and as with all of my models, there is a completion date marked there as well.
